This beutifully preserved walled city is in the south of Tuscany, a great base for visiting Tuscany and Umbria. Only a short trip to Florence and San gimignano to the north, Cortona and Rome to the south, and the Chianti region and the coast. To the West of Siena is the wild and undiscoved area of woodland, where the Abbey of San Galgano can be found, and the Maremma nature reserve, home to wild boar and wild horses.

Piazza del Campo, is the main square in the center of the small medieval city, where the famous horse race - "Il Palio" is run in July and August.

Dominating this square is the Palazzo Comunale - the town hall, where the civil wedding ceremony is held. This is one of the most remarkable town hall and museum complexes, with some of the most famous pre-Renaissance frescos adorning the walls and ceilings
