American citizens who wish to be married in Italy must obtain the documents listed below and follow the procedure described:

1. We advise you first to sent to us your documents by fax or email, so we may check that eveything is in order for your wedding.

2. You will need an American passport or American Armed Forces identification card.

3. If you are under 18, you will need a sworn statement by parents or legal guardian(s) consenting to the marriage

4. You must have a birth certificate showing names of both parents.

5. The Nulla Osta: you must perform a declaration, sworn to by the American citizen at the appropriate Consulate or Embassy in Italy, stating that he/she is free to marry. Bring your passport or military ID and, if applicable, final divorce decree, annulment decree, or death certificate to the appropriate American Consulate to make the declaration.

6. The above-mentioned declaration must be taken to the local Ufficio Legalizzazioni of the Prefettura for certification. Italyweddings will take care of this for you.

7. A second declaration (ATTO NOTORIO) is required. There are two ways to obtain this - in the US, prior to leaving for Italy, or once in Italy, with our assistance.

   If you plan to obtain the Atto Notorio in the Us, you will need to go to your nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate, and request an appointment. Many of your documents will need to be translated into Italian, and you will need to obtain apostilles for these documents. You will need to go to the offices of the Embassy or Consulate within their office hours, with at least two non-related witnesses.
